§ About

Double Entry · Accounting studio

A small studio, on purpose.

Twelve people, one office on Mercer Street and 340 clients we know by name. We stay small so that the person who answers your email is the person who knows your books.

Plate 1 — 48 Mercer Street, third floor

Open Mon–Fri, 8:30–6:00

Our story

2014 —

Margot Ellery spent nine years doing tax for companies with finance departments. She noticed that the businesses who needed good advice most, the bakeries, studios and two-person startups, were the ones least likely to get it.

Double Entry opened with four clients and one rule: the books are closed by the 10th, every month, no exceptions. Twelve years and 340 clients later, the rule hasn’t moved. Neither has our habit of explaining every number in a sentence anyone can follow.

We’re licensed in New York and file in all fifty states. Most of our clients never visit the office. The ones who do get very good coffee.

Three principles

Debits on the left. Credits on the right. Everything else, in plain English.

No. 01

Close on time

Your books are closed by the 10th. Late books lead to late decisions, so we treat the date like a filing deadline.

Explain the number

Every report comes with a sentence about what changed and why. If we can’t explain it simply, we haven’t finished.

No. 03

Answer the same day

A real accountant replies within four business hours. Our median last quarter was under three.

The people

Who keeps your books.

Every client has one named lead from this list, backed by a CPA who reviews every return.
